LION RICHARD V. "DICK" HIETANEN
APRIL 30, 1936 - AUGUST 19, 2009
Richard V. Hietanen, age 73, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri. He was born on April 30, 1936 in Sheffield, Ohio, a son to Vaino M. and Helen B. (Sarbiewski) Hietanen. On
June 16, 1956, he married Janet M. Palmiter in Jefferson, Ohio and she survives in Pinckneyville, Illinois.
Dick was a member of the family of Friendship Church of Christ in Tamaroa, Illinois and was a member of the Lions Club in Central City, Carterville and Pinckneyville, Illinois. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as an electrician first class during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Dick worked for Molded Fiberglass of Ashtabula, Ohio as an electrician and assisted in plant relocation to Centralia. The plant became Rockwell International and Dick was plant engineer. In 1979, Dick opened Hietanen Appliance in Centralia, and that became a Maytag Direct Store. In 2004, the store relocated to Marion and eventually closed due to the closing of Marion Maytag Plant.
Dick worked part time at True Value Hardware after he and his wife, Janet, retired to Pinckneyville.
Dick is survived by his wife; two daughters, Nancy Timpner and husband, Bill, of Pinckneyville, and Denise Waggoner and friend, Doug Dunbar, of Columbus, Neb.; and two grandchildren, Mallory and Will Timpner of Pinckneyville, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Dorothy Upole;
stepmother Margaret "Peg" Hietanen, and one son-in-law Richard "Rick" Waggoner.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2009, in Friendship Church of Christ in Tamaroa, with Minister Randy Allison officiating. Interment will be private. Friends may call from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Sunday and from 8:00 to
9:00 a.m. Monday at Pyatt Funeral Home in Pinckneyville; and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church.

"Dick had a deep passion for people and Service was his business:
Not just as the Maytag man: but as a man of service to his community
AS A 20 PLUS YEAR LIONS MEMBER, and his country.
Dick was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as an Engineer on the USS Pocono from 1956-1958 through the Cuban Missile Crisis.

We helped him through the Trust Fund as Dick states with tears in his eyes, “that’s what it is all about”
Biagi’s
83 year old Dante’ Biagi (30 year member) He ran the deep fryer for years at all functions. He was “protective” of his funnel cakes and no could “make them right.” Dick kindly told Dante’ Biagi that he was going to learn whether he liked it or not. A Purple T Shirt made for him that read:

Lions Fest: Sauteed Onions and Green Peppers (17 trips)
Dick was Food Stand Chairman for a couple of years and made sure things were done right. The food stand was 75 yards from the Lions Shelter kitchen and he personally made 17 trips back and forth to sauté onions and peppers for the brats and the polish as he wanted to “keep the polish tradition.”

Reverse Raffle is usually now the second Saturday in March every year. He asked Lion Carl Mecum to be his Co-Chairman and Lion Carl has ran it since the Hietanens had to move. The Raffle has earned on the average $3,000-5,000 per event and this enables the club to purchase 30 to 50 pair of eyeglasses for people of our community.

Bob Dugan Memorial Car, Truck, and BIKE Show
The motorcycles were added to the Memorial Car and Turck Show because of Dick.

This past spring 16 members come to Central City Lions Club with Dick and Jan.
